My approach to counselling prioritizes what is important and meaningful to each individual I work with. I help people with issues such as: anxiety, insomnia, traumatic experiences and loss, relationship issues, depression, chronic pain, and managing stress.

My passion for learning and desire to be of real help has led me to gain expertise in a variety of therapeutic approaches which I integrate in a way that works for YOU.

I love working with people to develop their own internal resources, gain new skills, develop curiosity, insight and clarity, and explore new ways of seeing and being at times of difficulty and transition in their lives.

ABOUT JULIE

Hello, I’m Julie Giroux, a Registered Clinical Counsellor based in Victoria, British Columbia. Since 1993, I have worked in a variety of social service and health care roles providing specialized services to those dealing with challenging life experiences.

 

I graduated from the University of Toronto twice, first in 2001 with a degree in Occupational Therapy and again in 2014 with a master's degree in Counselling Psychology & Psychotherapy.  I also completed the teacher certification in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction at the University of Massachusetts Medical School between 2010 and 2018.  

 

In recent years I have specialized my clinical practice in helping individuals heal from a wide range of traumatic experiences, chronic stress, anxiety, panic attacks, depression and insomnia. I help people get in touch with what matters most to them and develop more fulfilling and satisfying lives. I have pursued in-depth training in Somatic Experiencing, EMDR (including advanced training in Attachment-Focused EMDR), Reconsolidation Therapy for PTSD, Psychedelic Integration, Cognitive Processing Therapy for PTSD and Focusing. Above all, I take an individualized approach to everyone I work with.

CLINICAL COUNSELLING / PSYCHOTHERAPY
(ONLINE)

By secure video (Jane App) or phone. Many people have found online counselling to be effective. It has the added benefit of being in the comfort of your own space and not having to travel.

I work online Monday through Friday mornings starting at 8:30 and Wednesday and Fridays afternoons ending by 5pm.

CLINICAL COUNSELLING / PSYCHOTHERAPY
(IN-PERSON)

I am in office on Monday and Thursday afternoon/evenings. In-person sessions have limited capacity and therefore longer wait times than online appointments.

INSIGHT TIMER
Guided Meditation & Yoga

I have been a teacher on the Insight Timer app since 2017. On the Insight Timer App or website you will find a freely offered collection of my recordings for guided meditation, gentle yoga, Focusing and EMDR Resource Tapping.

COMPLIMENTARY 20-MINUTE INTRODUCTORY SESSION

Finding the right match in a therapist is important. To help us decide if we might be a good fit to work together I am happy to schedule a 20-minute initial consultation online or by phone. I book these appointments when I have space for new clients coming available in my practice.

EMDR THERAPY FOR TRAUMA, PHOBIAS, ANXIETY  and PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT.

EMDR can be very effective for trauma-related concerns, as well as phobias, anxiety, and performance enhancement.  For trauma processing, EMDR therapy typically requires 1.5 hours per session.

MINDFULNESS PRACTICE

I am a certified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher and can offer both group and individual formats for mindfulness training for stress reduction and overall well-being.

UPDATE: December 3, 2023

I anticipate some space opening up in the new year for new clients for online therapy.  I find that therapy is most effective when we begin with meeting weekly, or sometimes every other week, to start. This also allows me to hold a regular day of week and time of day for us to meet.  For those with alternate work/life schedule we can discuss ways to work around this. Less frequent sessions (eg. monthly or as needed) are reserved for existing clients for maintenance once we have made significant progress on your goals.

 

If you are interested in finding out when I anticipate taking new clients please complete my contact form on the website to indicate your interest.  I do not keep a formal "waiting list" but if you write to me I will provide an estimate of when I am likely to have space based on your needs and availability. It is helpful if you provide information on why you are interested to see me and your availability during weekdays between 8:30am and 6pm.

Apologies in advance if it takes up to a week for me to respond to new client inquiries.
